The Star and its competitors, Crown Resorts are set to pay $120 million more in taxes each year, with the duties on poker machine and table game revenue lifted from last July.

The toll could mean a $1.6 billion downgrade to the value of The Star Sydney’s casino, meaning thousands of hospitality and hotel jobs could be at risk.

Director of the United Workers Union, Dario Mujkic, told Joe Hildebrand that the union is opposing these tax hikes, in order to save jobs.

“The proposal would hit the operation of The Star pretty hard,” said Mujkic.

“There’s an incoming government and a new Treasurer, let’s have a conversation about this.”
