‘Game changer’: Is this government agency already doing the Voice’s work?

Joe Hildebrand

The National Indigenous Australian Agency (NIAA) is committed to improving the lives of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and so is the proposed Voice.

Some are questioning whether we need an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, as the NIAA, who works with the Minister for Indigenous Australians, is already working on policies and services.

“It’s a government department that is responsible to the Minister of the day to deliver services and handle money,” Director of From the Heart, Dean Parkin, told Joe Hildebrand.

“The Voice has to be independent from government…to tell these departments how it actually works,” said Parkin.
