Tacks and nails have been thrown in an act of sabotage onto the new Northern Rivers Rail Trail, leaving bike riders stranded.

The trail runs along 24 kilometres of old railway line between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek in the Tweed Shire.

Tacks and nails have been thrown onto the path three times since it opened on March 1, and the locals have a bone to pick with the saboteurs, who may have opposed the track from the start.

Tweed Councillor and Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Warren Polglase, believes the old train line will “never operate again”, and locals should see the trail as a positive.

“We have had over 8000 people use the rail trail since it opened,” Mr Polglase told Deborah Knight.

“We need the tourist money and people to support our emerging businesses, which is a great outcome for everybody.”
