PM: AUKUS ‘the right decision for Australia’

Reacting to Former Prime Minister Paul Keating’s scathing attack on the Labor Party and its AUKUS deal for a tripartite build of nuclear-powered submarines, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government had “done the right thing”.

Mr Keating described the submarine deal, that has bipartisan support, as the worst international decision by the Labor Party in more than 100 years.

“This is the right decision for Australia,” Mr Albanese said.

“The best way to keep Australia safe is to invest in our capabilities but also to invest in our relationships.”

He said Mr Keating was entitled to his own views but he had “misrepresented the government’s approach”.
