Why Mark Latham isn’t backing the Premier’s ‘future fund’ for NSW kids

Mark Levy

The NSW One Nation leader has shot down the state government’s plan to create savings funds for children.

If re-elected, the Coalition has promised to give every child under 10 $400 each year to create a nest egg for when they turn 18.

But Mark Latham said a key problem with the idea is its lack of means testing.

“This is the 20th of them in NSW where Perrottet and Kean give the money to people who are millionaires or very high income earners,” he told Ray Hadley.

“Wouldn’t you rather see the money going to millionaires go to the middle income earners?”

Mr Latham said the debt is now so high, $17,000 is owed for every person in NSW.

“So to say to young people, ‘We’ve lumbered you with this future debt, you and your kids and your grandkids will have to pay it off … and in return, we’re going to give you $400’, … it’s not much of a bargain, is it?”
