Off duty police office drowns trying to save child at NSW beach

Summer Mornings

An off-duty police officer has drowned after entering the water to help two children in trouble at a beach on the South Coast.

They were at an unpatrolled section of Handkerchief Beach, near Narooma.

More than a thousand rescues have been carried out on the state’s coastline since Christmas Day.

Surf Live Saving New South Wales chief executive Steven Pearce told Mark Levy a bystander gave his life to get the boy to safety.
