Guide dogs implicated in puppy farm bill

Mark Levy

The NSW Agriculture Minister is warning guide dogs will be impacted by the so-called puppy farm bill.

Labor has voted in favour of the joint Greens-Animal Justice Party bill, with a series of amendments.

The bill would limit pet shops to only sell rehomed cats and dogs and cap a female dog from having more than two litters in her lifetime.

Guide Dogs NSW indicate they need around 200 puppies each year as part of their program, but would be limited to a maximum of 10 fertile female dogs under the proposed bill.

Minister Dugald Saunders told Ray Hadley the unintended consequences are severe.
