Mobile phones will be banned in public schools if Labor wins the state election in a bid to improve results and keep teenagers safe online.

The election pledge would see high school students forced to turn off their phones and keep them out of sight during the school day.

Currently, phones are banned in NSW primary schools but high schools can act at their own discretion.

NSW Labor leader Chris Minns told Ben Fordham it will be up to schools how the ban is implemented.

“Whether they collect all mobile phones at the beginning of the day or they just make it a blanket rule that you cannot take it out of your bag while class is in session.”

iPads will still be allowed.
