Waverley Council says there is ‘far superior’ technology to shark nets

Trent Nikolic

Waverley Council, which takes in Bondi Beach, says there is “far superior” technology out there compared to shark nets but stopped short of calling for their removal.

It comes after data released found there were hundreds of other animals, some critically endangered, getting caught in the nets.

Mayor of Waverley Council, Paula Masselos, said while protecting human life will always be the priority, the shark nets are “very old technology”.

“They’re quite static,” she told Jim Wilson on 2GB Drive.

“The new technology that is around now like smarts drums, like aerial surveillance – drones, they talk to each other, so we actually know what’s going on.”

New South Wales Agricultural Minister, Dugald Saunders, said “there’s no plans” shark nets would be removed for the upcoming summer, but admitted a conversation between the state government and councils should be had.

“You don’t suddenly drop one thing immediately because a few people are calling for change right now,” he said.

“We need some proper discussion, we need … community feedback, at the end of the day, the whole solution is on the table for the coming summer.”
