‘No one finished at 5 o’clock’: SES volunteer hits back at flood criticism

Ben Fordham

A scathing NSW parliamentary inquiry into the state’s deadly floods has criticised the NSW SES.

Labor’s Walt Secord chaired the inquiry, suggesting government agencies treated the floods as a “nine to five business”.

Woodburn SES Commander Ashley Slapp told Ben Fordham his unit worked 24/7 “while their own houses were going under”.

“We didn’t knock off, we didn’t sleep on it – we slept on the floor.

“No one stopped working, no one had a day off, no one finished at 5 o’clock.”
