Does your side-hustle void your home insurance?

2GB Afternoons

Concerns are growing around side-businesses and ABNs registered at home voiding home and contents insurance.

The story that began the distress was that of Justin Uebergang and Verity Metcalfe who lost their house to an electrical fire.

The couple were operating a small egg business from their farm shed, however their insurance was voided by AAMI when they learned there was an ABN registered to the property.

The couple’s lawyer Hayriye Uluca from Maurice Blackburn joined Deborah Knight to explain the concerning situation.

“It didn’t occur to them to disclose their farmgate business because it wasn’t operating from the house that they were insuring,” she said.

Ms Uluca also raised a number of concerns around how businesses are defined and who might be at risk of having their insurance voided.

“If you’re selling goods on Gumtree, is that a business?” she asked.

“There may be absolutely no connection between that business activity and the losses that you suffered.”

The story has resulted in many concerned listeners hitting the Afternoons line with a raft of questions and stories about whether they might be at risk.
