Who can apply for the $750 disaster payments?

Mark Levy

Federal Minister for Government Services Bill Shorten has cleared confusion surrounding the $750 disaster payments.

The pandemic leave disaster payment is a lump sum offered to those who do not have access to sick leave, and are unable to work due to COVID-19 isolation requirements.

But the confusion was apparent over who is eligible and who is not as some close contacts were still able to apply.

Mr Shorten told Ray Hadley that when applying they will need to provide evidence of a statement showing sick leave balance, proof of a positive test result for COVID-19, being a close contact among others.

In terms of close contacts being eligible for the payments, the threshold is if you’ve lost income because you can’t attend work.

Some claims are also subject to a financial hardship test.
