Can you be forced to come back into the office?

As we enter a new working world, questions are being asked as to whether businesses can compel their staff to return to the office. 

CEO of Business Australia Daniel Hunter joined Jim Wilson on Drive to talk about when we should work from home and how it affects the economy.

“It certainly hurts CBD areas,” he said.

“We need to work together on occasion, I think it depends on the role.”

Employment and industrial law barrister Ian Neil joined Jim to give the legal details and to talk about how being compelled to come back to the office relates to covid safety.

“All employees have an obligation to obey the lawful and reasonable directions of their employer,” he said.

“A direction to come into work will almost certainly be lawful given that there are no public health orders or the like.
