New gambling ban aimed at getting addicts support

Chris Smith

Family members could soon be able to get gambling-addicted loved ones banned from clubs.

The draft plan from ClubsNSW would see responsible gambling officers made mandatory in every club.

It will also allow family members of gambling addicts to apply to exclude them from venues.

An independent panel would be responsible for deciding the length of the ban and if someone appears to have a gambling problem, club staff will be trained to intervene.

ClubsNSW CEO Josh Landis told Chris Smith the ban is in place to get help to those who need it as quickly as possible.

“We appreciate that families are best placed to know if a loved one is in trouble,” he said.

“If they’re not [okay] we’re going to make sure we’re trained to look after them.”
