A winter wave of COVID and flu infections is seeing a Sydney GP calling for COVID restrictions to return.

Australia’s infection rate is slowly rising and in the past 24 hours, there have been more than 29,000 infections.

Sydney GP Dr Kerryn Phelps told Chris Smith it’s time to see mask mandates returning and isolation periods to return around 10-14 days.

“This is about community spirit and protecting other people,” Dr Phelps said.

“The mandate is being discussed because strongly recommending people [to wear them] isn’t working.
