Who won this year’s Archibald Packing Room Prize?

Michael McLaren

Australia’s oldest and arguably most popular art prize has announced a winner for this year’s competition.

The Art Gallery of NSW’s head packer, Brett Cuthbertson exercised his majority vote to select a portrait of New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi by Claus Stangl to win the Archibald Packing Room Prize.

Brett Cuthbertson told Deborah Knight the portrait “jumped out at me”.

“He just got Taika’s personality perfectly,” he said.

“It was probably the hardest portrait he’s ever had to paint.”
