Scientists have found one of the greatest ever undiscovered shipwrecks 107 years after it sank.

The Endurance was trapped in sea ice for months before sinking to the deep in 1915.

The ship was found at the bottom of the Weddell Sea in fantastic condition and Assistant Curator at Australian Maritime Museum Inger Sheil told Deborah Knight, “It’s superb”.

“From what I can see a lot of the damage was… sustained during the months that it was icebound.”

Being found on the 100th anniversary of Shackelton’s funeral Ms Sheil said “It’s deeply moving”.

“I hope it draws more people into reading about the heroic age of antarctic exploration.”
