Surf lifesavers ‘devastated’ as rescue group terminated

BEN FORDHAM EXCLUSIVE

A volunteer is pushing back against a plan to terminate the operation of an offshore rescue boat at Randwick.

Surf Rescue 30 has been in operation since 1969 and is on call 24/7.

Surf Life Saving New South Wales says a review of big boats has uncovered concerns about some operational risks.

Volunteer Annie told Ben Fordham hundreds of lives have been saved by the group.

“There’s been no directive in terms of reasoning behind this and everybody is at a loss to understand why.”
