‘It’s upsetting’: Luxury private picnickers oust residents from harbourside parks

There are calls to charge private picnic operators a fee to use North Sydney’s harbourside parks as residents struggle to find a square inch to relax.

North Sydney Council Deputy Mayor Kathy Brodie told Jim Wilson the operators take over public space hours before their events, and attendees leave bins overflowing and trash on the ground.

“They’re monopolising the space, and they’re not cleaning up after them, which is what’s causing the community to say ‘hey, what’s going on’?”

While the picnics have been ongoing pre-lockdown, the problem has only grown.

“More picnickers and more private curators … are setting up shop for special events or groups of ten.

“It’s upsetting, I think public spaces, public parks are for everyone to freely enjoy.”
