Jim Haynes in his ‘Australiana’ segment with Chris Smith gets an avalanche of callers all with great stories about refrigeration and ice making in the past. In 1923 the first commercially available Australian-made domestic refrigerator to operate without ice was produced by Edward Hallstrom. It was called the ‘ICEY BALL’ and used kerosene and was ideal for the bush. Oddly the bush had fridges first – before the city or towns. Jim remembers his first fridge was a green second-hand Silent Knight, about 1956 and his dad saved up the money in a tin.
