Workplace injuries with Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr David Hale

John Stanley

The month of August is National Tradies Health Month. While this month encompasses these workers whole health, their physical health is an important focus. Around 60% of tradies often have aches and pains as a result of their job. Trades such as floor-layers, bricklayers and carpenters are two and a half times more likely to have serious knee injuries that could lead to surgery in comparison to sedentary workers. Activities identified as increasing risk of injury include excessive kneeling, squatting, standing, lifting and climbing stairs, which are all daily occurrences for most trades. Similarly back and shoulder pains are commonly experienced by tradespeople too. This month raises awareness of the risks in trade occupations to help keep Aussie tradies healthy.

Dr David Hale, head of Orthopaedics at the San joins John Stanley to discuss some of these common workplace injuries.
