Talking further on BMW’s second generation 4-series coupe – I drove the two most affordable variants, the entry 420i at $70,990 and the 430i at $88,900. Both feature 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engines that feel more like six-cylinder, especially the the more powerful 430i which has 190kW of power compared to the 420i with 135. In the BMW tradition drive is to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters. These latest 4-series coupes are good looking with M Sport styling, have an aggressive stance with large 19-inch alloys and feature a bold vertical grille that gives them an individual character from the 3-series sedan.

On a winding country road they are superb driving cars but the 430I has the edge with its adaptive electronic suspension which can get a little jiggly on our broken road surfaces but on a smooth tarmac is absolutely first class, providing real assurance in steering feel and handling, especially in the recent rain, plus a superb ride. For me the extra $18,000 for the $430i is well spent, adding M Sport adaptive suspension and brakes, adaptive cruise control, parking assistance plus with surround view cameras, front and rear cross traffic alert, and  full leather trim to mention just a fraction of its specification. Few disappointments, warranty only three-years unlimited whereas Mercedes-Benz and some other offer five-years cover.

With its distinctive style the second generation BMW 4-Series has really hit a sweet spot.
