Are students getting marked down for poor spelling?

A recent article suggested NSW HSC students are NOT marked down for spelling mistakes. Paul Martin, CEO of NESA, spoke to the Two Murrays to clear up a misunderstanding.
“When you are writing under exam conditions, you will make a couple of spelling errors. We don’t sweat the small spelling errors, but we do make sure that students can write correctly and coherently. So spelling, grammar, syntax and vocabulary all matter”.
“Effectively the HSC is not a spelling test, but spelling matters.”
“Spelling is paramount as part of the whole subject of English. Of course it is.”
