Best cars I drove in 2020 irrespective of price

David Berthon

A casual chat with some friends over Xmas and a fairly familiar question  – so what was the best cars you drove in 2020 irrespective of price. Not easy to answer, the car industry a constantly changing landscape – but two cars stood out both  expensive yes but memorable with exceptional qualities.

First up, BMW’s M550I xDrive Pure sedan.  Without overstating it a simply exceptional sports sedan – a 5-series V8 performance sedan at $134,900, a twin turbo 4.4 litre V8 driving all four wheels via an eight speed automatic – just so smooth and progressive, BMW xDrive the marketing term for an all-wheel-drive system with an electronically actuated clutch-pack differential, varying the torque between front and rear axles –  second up, Audi’s latest S6 TFSI quattro sedan at 149,900, again all-wheel-drive, a twin turbo 2.9-litre V6 aided by a 48volt mild hybrid system, also in eight speed automatic.

I just drove this car 800kms in day on a round trip to Cowra, via Oberon and back through Orange – a performance sedan that simply eats the kilometres with ease and yet returned a stunning 6.6L/100kms. The latest Audi S6 a wonderful compromise between open road performance and driver comfort – both cars not inexpensive but in a motoring world where SUV’s rule both of these sedans are simply exceptional in every way.
