Is the future of smoking prescription-only?

Purchasing a pack of smokes could soon look a little different, in the hopes of achieving a smoke-free society.

There are calls for tougher restrictions in an effort to limit tobacco cigarette sales, with a new proposal from the University of Queensland suggesting smokers present a prescription at pharmacies if they wish to light up.

As the cause of one in seven fatalities in Australia, it seems many may soon have no choice but to follow the doctor’s orders.

Billie Bonevski, who co-leads Research Excellence on Achieving the Tobacco Endgame, assures John Stanley it’s not a plan to eradicate cigarettes, just one that makes it easier for those wanting to say no to nicotine.
