Imagine being forced to pay rent after 45 years of home ownership.

Well, that’s what happened to 88-year-old pensioner Eileen Collins. After 45 years of home ownership, the government forcibly acquired Eileen’s home to make way for the expansion of the Prince of Wales Hospital.

The is the same hospital Eileen has volunteered at for the past 15 years. Settling with the government, she sold her home to them only to have them charge her rent, $800 a week until she moves out.

Ben Fordham speaks with Eileen and Health Minister Brad Hazzard for more details.

“We’re trying to put in more than three-quarters of a million dollars to do up the campus.

“I required Health Infrastructure to go away and come back to me with proposals about what might make it a little more reasonable for Eileen.

“I’m saying to them, can’t we be more reasonable here folks.”
