January 9 marks 150 years since the very last shipment of convicts docked on Australian shores in 1868.

The 89-day journey would undoubtedly have seen horrendous conditions with the ships facing tough waters according to go-to convict expert Emeritus Professor Jenny Gregory.

She speaks with Michael McLaren on this historic piece of Australia’s timeline.

“There was approximately 10,000 sent to Western Australia. They were all male, unlike the east coast.

“There was a great sense shame if you had convicts amongst your relatives.”
