Wards being closed amid hospital funding crisis

Last month hundreds of nurses rallied outside Westmead Hospital to demonstrate against the closure of a 29-bed surgical ward.

Ward B3A was used for vascular, plastic, head and neck, ENT and dental surgery.

Nurses are now calling on the state government to ensure Westmead Hospital is adequately funded, to prevent future ward closures.

The hospital says it’s routine practice to close beds to match demand, but nurses fear management is trying to reduce costs, by reducing overall nursing numbers.

Staff are being told the ward will reopen at the beginning of the next financial year.

Chief Executive of Western Sydney Local Health District Danny O’Connor called Ray Hadley claiming the closure of the ward is regular practice over the warmer months.

“No one has lost their job. Nobody has been displaced because of this.”
