The use of DNA in solving crime

Following the charging of a man after DNA linked him to an historic armed robbery yesterday, Luke Grant seeks out the expertise of Adel Atalla, Chief Inspector | Manager DNA Management Unit, to shed some light on how DNA forensics is used to solve crimes.

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) can be used to identify criminals with incredible accuracy when biological evidence exists. 

By the same token, DNA can be used to clear suspects and exonerate persons mistakenly accused or convicted of crimes. 

In all, DNA technology is increasingly vital to ensuring accuracy and fairness in the criminal justice system.
