New apple coming to Australia, “it’s one of the fastest commercialisations”

Rural News

In about five years time, Australians will be able to stick their teeth into a new exciting apple variety.

The Cosmic Crisp is a unique sweet variety that’s been developed in the US over the past two decades.

Red Rich Fruits has secured the exclusive rights to grow the fruit, and will start putting the first trees in the ground later this year.

Managing Director Matthew Polise told Macquarie National News Rural Reporter Eddie Summerfield the Cosmic Crisp is both consumer, and grower friendly.

“It’s a red fleshed apple, with starburst-like lenticels, very crisp, sweet, and growers big, larger fruit,” Mr Polise said.

“There’s eleven and a million trees planted in the US, it’s taken twenty years to develop the variety, and this is their first major commercial crop this year, with 450,000 boxes being produced.”
