German International School Sydney Christmas Market
You might have heard that it doesn’t feel like a ‘real’ Christmas in Australia, without the cold winter weather. Lucky for Sydneysiders, the 2018 German International School Sydney’s (GISS) annual twilight German Christmas Market is as real as it gets. GISS will be bringing the festive season forward, to August 17th and 18th, allowing visitors to experience Christmas in the Winter months. As the Northern Hemisphere’s traditional Christmas Market comes to the Northern Beaches, the school grounds will be transformed into a dazzling Winterland featuring an array of family friendly elements from a dedicated children’s area, a traditional lantern parade to authentic fare.
For our young market goers, the school soccer field will become a festive Winter wonderland. A space where children can enjoy Christmas songs in both English and German, under twinkling stars adorning the roof top. Visitors will be entertained by magician and balloon shows, as well as a Puppet theatre.
Nothing keeps you toasty like a bonfire, and families can relish in toasting marshmallows with the safety of the Terrey Hills fire brigade. The highlight of the night each year is the traditional German Lantern Walk. A special event just for the children, beautiful handmade lanterns can be purchased on the night to join the parade.
To accompany the toasted marshmallows, kids can enjoy a hot chocolate while adults can beat off the cold with a mug of Gluhwein (mulled wine). There will be an abundance of tasty German food to devour, including bratwurst, sauerkraut, pancakes, corn and waffles. Aside from the food stalls, it wouldn’t be a Christmas market without a wide array of unique stalls, reminiscent of an authentic European Christmas Market. Dressed in fairy lights, each stall will boast craftwork of real quality, including local produce, handmade festive decorations, home wares, jewellery, handcrafted toys and craftwork.
From 5pm-9pm on Friday 17th and 4pm-9pm on Saturday 18th, GISS will be celebrating the end of the chilly season with their annual twilight German Christmas Market. The aroma of authentic German food will be enough to entice visitors in, to enjoy the unique activities and explore high quality market stalls. The GISS German Christmas Markets are a fusion of two cultures for the entire family to enjoy, and the opportunity to experience a ‘real’ Christmas this winter can’t be missed.
