Julia Gillard’s policy on boat people – what do you think?

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced her policy on asylum seekers, saying that she believed Australians wished to welcome genuine refugees, but also expected arrivals to learn the rules under which the nation lives.

"This means that when newcomers settle in our community they accept their responsibility as members of that community - to learn English, to get a job and send their kids to school like everyone else," Ms Gillard said.

"Most refugees fulfill these obligations and are grateful to be able to make a new home in this country.”

"But the rules are the rules, we will ensure refugees shoulder the same obligations as Australians generally."

Ms Gillard said that her policy will ensure that people arriving by boat does not give anyone an advantage, and that people smugglers have no product to sell.

She said it would not be a return to the Pacific solution under John Howard.

What are your thoughts on Ms Gillard’s policy announcement?

Do you think the policy will deter people smugglers? Or will they continue unabated?

What are your thoughts on legitimate refugees? Do you think they sometimes, wrongly, get confused with “queue jumpers”?

Or do you think we should close our borders altogether?

Have your say.

I think its bad for australia. Australia though is supposed to be a big developed country has limited resources and has to depend on its poor third world neighbours for their toilet rolls to their most advanced machinery. If its going to encourrage these boat people this dependence which is already high.

What was wrong with the Pacific Solution Julia? It worked for John Howard and the Australian people, why not go back to it?

I do not agree with her policy, John Howard had a system that worked why would you change something that was working, does not make any sense to me. Just goes to show how incompetent the labour party is

I find this issue particularly frustrating as the left side of politics have a view that it is ok to break the law as long as you arrive in a boat. They make the average Australian who is out there working and paying taxes feel like some heatless uncaring redneck. Genuine refugees have a legitimate internationally recognised process to apply for refugee status. We a sick of seeing our taxes squandered on supporting people who take the law into their own hands and avoid the consequeces.

As with most ALP policies, their head is in a very dark place when it comes to boat people.

The boats need to be returned to their country of origin.
