Fatal balcony collapse could happen again

Two people have died following a balcony collapse in Melbourne over the weekend.

Brian Seidler, Director of Master Builder’s Association NSW, tells Chris Kenny more accidents could occur over the holiday period.

“If you’re going to load up a balcony, which a lot of people do this time of year, you’ve got to be sure that it’s structurally sound to take the weight.”

Brian says more people are renovating their decks and balconies but aren’t getting them checked by a professional engineer.

“There’s been an increased trend in DIY projects that are spawned from TV programs [which] suggest you can do these things yourself. It should be designed and inspected by professional structural engineers.”
